Recording was done at Garey Shelton Productions in Seattle, Washington and Garey did an excellent job of capturing PK’s magic. What you hear on Rough Shod is a short & slightly polished version of a PK Dwyer street performance without the background noise of traffic or conversation.

Track #4: Noticed By The Blues was inspired by late Seattle Blues guitarist Dave Conant. This tune is a bit different from PK’s usual raucous style and is the only song on Rough Shod that does not feature harmonica . . . it’s also PK’s favorite.

Track #5: Long Way Back was written after an injury and complications with arthritis in his hands forced a 5 month lay-off in which PK was unable to play guitar. Dwyer was not going to accept that his performing days were over and began the arduous task of teaching himself to play guitar without the use of his left index finger.

Notes on Rough Shod from Mrs D: Some folks might be curious as to why the album is called Rough Shod when there is no song by that title . . .

PK always wears down his shoes really fast and this was especially true while we were living in New York City. One day I was looking at him & thought to myself: Wow. PK is always Rough Shod. Then I thought that would be a cool title for an album and kept the idea rolling around in the back of my mind . . . Rough Shod is also an apt description of how PK & I feel after the journey of the past few years.

The art work was heavily influenced by my own love of the southwest desert and my obsession with The Rifleman television series.

The CD is dedicated to my step-mother Joanne who passed away this year after battling 4 different types of cancer over twelve years. She was always a supporter and champion of our crazy adventures & schemes. Joanne and PK shared a great love for Elvis. She traveled a rough road with dignity and grace and will forever be an inspiration to both PK and myself.

Keep up with us here: www.pkdwyer.com

Summer Daze & Feelin' Fine

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 273px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hJnyX2eZAvk/ThCaGt8QXjI/AAAAAAAAAKo/oSfr9a8bSvA/s400/summer-goddess.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5625165374787968562" />
The Days of Summer are now upon us and they feel Lazy in comparison to the hectic pace of our late Spring Tour . . .
Our latest road adventure was a short trip to Flagstaff, Arizona for the 10th Annual Flagstaff Folk Festival. The festival is held in a beautiful wooded setting at the Coconino Center for the Arts. There is a wonderful Barn for the performing bands and Solo Artists have a nice space to perform inside the Gallery. We didn't really know what to expect as it was our first time there and PK Dwyer is not well known as a performer in Flagstaff . . .

PK was warmly received and was definitely of a different ilk from the other performers . . . and of course I mean that in a good way! I'd be willing to bet PK is the only artist who is a full-time musician [No Day Jobs for us folks!] but it was a good and diverse mix of talented performers. I do have a few small criticisms however . . . #1 Since this was our first year going and performing I had emailed the festival coordinator with some basic questions regarding what equipment we needed to bring besides instruments, if dogs were allowed on the festival grounds, and if there would be shaded parking available. The festival coordinator never did get back to me. Pretty disappointing considering I made it clear this was our first time going and I wanted it to be a smooth and enjoyable experience for all involved . . . #2 Tony Norris was the performer scheduled to follow PK and let me tell you, this guy is a Complete and Utter Jerk! There was no Stage Manager at the Gallery Stage and the performances got off schedule by about 5 minutes. This was due to an early performer doing one more song than he should have but it did not seem a big deal at the time. The performer ahead of PK, Skylar Wolf, who has an absolutely amazing voice, went on to do his thirty minutes and PK took the stage directly after. So, this guy Tony Norris was all in a dither because he thought PK was being a Stage Hog. Instead of trying to find out why things were slightly off schedule Tony tried to bully PK off the stage while PK was performing his last song! Totally and Completely Unprofessional Tony . . . and you came off as Rude and a Buffoon besides. Luckily, PK was so focused on his own performance he gave Tony the brush and finished his last song and there was no fighting on stage! Overall though, we had a fabulous time and hope to return again next year. One thing that made it special for us was that Lannie & Kerry Dewberry came from Phoenix to see & hear PK perform . . . the Dewberry's are special & wonderful folks. It's nice to have friends and fans who support you like that!

PK is Busking in Burque and I am preparing for my upcoming surgery. Because of the surgery and recovery time we'll be sticking close to home for the next few months. The ongoing 95+ degree days lend a certain feeling of Laziness to the Days of Summer. We've been spending many an evening out on the veranda watching the amazing Albuquerque sunsets, hanging out with the dogs, eating ice cream, popsicles, and listening to music . . . ahhh summertime.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://madmanbumangel.blogspot.com/2011/07/summer-daze-feelin-fine.html' title='Summer Daze & We are Home!

Well. The first leg of the tour is complete, and although it was cut a bit short by PK breaking a tooth, we still had a fabulous time! Much better than the last go around, in part because we didn't have to deal with our 1974 Camper breaking down every twenty minutes . . . great times and fun gigs too. Especially the 'Anniversary Show' at C&P Coffee! Wonderful to see old friends, hear PK's fabulous tunes and to enjoy the espresso at good ol' faithful C&P. We enjoyed ourselves so much in the Pacific Northwest we even contemplated - just for a moment, mind you - moving back to Seattle! . . . Upon some serious reflection both Mr & Mrs D decided against it. The traffic, weather, and overall cost of living being the overwhelming negative factors.

Mrs D is super glad to be home and of course PK can't wait to get back out on the road! For now it's time for some rest, relaxation, and reflection. Summer solstice is coming . . . we're Junebuggin' here is Burque and will Hit the Road once again in September. Yeehaw!

photo of Albuquerque Sunset . . . PK is in the recording studio this week [May 24 and May 25] We have a fun series of shows up & coming and will be making some time for family & friends. Looking forward to returning to Pegasus Coffee House for the first time in many years. Apparently the place has gone through a remodel and features an expanded menu. The offerings sound fabulous . . . and being the total foodie I am, I cannot wait to sample the menu! I'm sure the coffee and baked goodies are still as fabulous as ever.

Recently had a couple of good busking days on Alki Beach. Smash & Toast galore! PK always says Alki is his favorite 'office' and he wouldn't mind going to work there every day . . . and I always said if the little pink house on the beach was ever for sale I would have to find a way to buy it! Last Spring when we were in Seattle it was indeed For Sale. Is it still? We haven't been by to check on it yet as most streets were closed for an Open Air Market on the days we spent at the beach. I dare say living on Alki Beach is probably the only thing that would get PK & I to move back to Seattle . . .

Been lucky with the weather so far although after today the rest of the week looks to be pretty dreary with showers and high temps only in the 50 degree range. Uhg! Makes me even more homesick for Albuquerque! [I confess, I've had enough of being On The Road for now and am anxious to return home] Folklife is coming up though & I'm looking forward to that for sure! Fortunately, PK's performance is in the Shaw Room so it won't matter too much if it ends up pouring . . . might put a damper on attendance though and that's not good for anyone.

Wow. May 29 will be our Ninth Wedding Anniversary! Just where does the time go?! It really does seem like just yesterday that PK & I met . . . a lot has happened [and is still happening!] since then. Whoo! We'll be having a Celebratory Party and PK Dwyer Show at the superbly wonderful C&P Coffee Co! Join us on May 30th as we commemorate Nine Years of Love, Laughter, and Tears . . . prosecco cocktails for all who show up! So Be There.

[PK & I will be having a private celebration on May 29 @ my favorite all time restaurant: Maharaja in West Seattle and let me tell you, I cannot wait! We used to eat at Maharaja at least once a week when we lived in the Tiny Palace in West Seattle . . . ]

photos is a view of Seattle from Alki Beach . . . photographer unknown

Mighty PK

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 237px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Y0kFCo6IMfg/TdXcc1xTyCI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/LcMZ7g01ARo/s400/PKDWYER.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608631298988165154" />

photo by Roberto E. PK & I have had a great time in Eastern Washington, including Busking at River Front Park in Spokane and a wonderful show in Leavenworth put on by the Community Coffeehouse and Icicle Arts. We felt so fortunate and honored to have PK perform at the last Leavenworth Community Coffeehouse! The Coffeehouse is ending after a seventeen year run and has featured wonderful acoustic performances from many a talented artist. We had a full house attending and PK gave a stellar performance . . . a fine time was had by all! We were given lodging for the night at the Tierra Learning Center & Retreat. The cabin seemed quite luxurious after many nights of tiny motel rooms. The bed was super comfortable and had a down comforter which was wonderful to curl up in! The doggies enjoyed themselves running and sniffing around in the woods, it was all very Zen with no television or wi-fi. So peaceful in contrast with the hectic pace of being on the road.

We then had a few wet & dreary days Busking at Civic Plaza in Wenatchee. Folks were appreciative and dug the music, there just weren't many of them around due to the weather. Smallish Smash & Toast here and the Motel 6 we were at had a weird vibe. I would not stay at that particular one again although I do Love Motel 6. Motel 6 is great for wanderers who travel with dogs . . . I'm hoping they might be a Tour Sponsor next year!

We've been at the Trail West Motel in Grand Coulee, Washington the past few days and I highly recommend it! A bit beat & run down but very clean and the owners are super friendly! Dogs are allowed with a $20 fee. There is a heated pool [which just opened for the season] and BBQ area. Grand Coulee is a neat small town. Very beat in the best kind of way. PK had a couple of really great Busking days playing in front of The Variety Store [Yes, that's the name: The Variety Store and it's like a wonderful old school 5 & 10 type store. The kind of place you could spend at least an hour just browsing around.] The folks in Grand Coulee just Loved PK and his Music & we made good Smash & Toast! Looking forward to a strawberry milk shake from the Tee Pee Drive-in on our way out of town tomorrow. Yum!

The weather has been superfine today [a nice sunny 75 degrees - finally!] . . . and I enjoyed a stroll around the town & discovered the Senior Center Thrift Store where I got six books for 65 cents. They had a great selection of Romance Novels from the '60's and '70's - just what I was looking for and now I'm set for the rest of the trip!

The kick-off of the May Sunbanks Rhythm & Blues Festival is tonight! Music starts @ 8:00 pm tonight with PK's performance in the Acoustic Cantina . . . if you know what's good for you, you'll be there!

The Timeless Tunes of PK Dwyer . . .

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 392px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zDDk3n-yI9g/TcwFqRnV3iI/AAAAAAAAAJE/-CH18RtbTuk/s400/Healed%253ACover%2B011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5605861860010483234" />
1. Doesn't everybody?

Having breakfast out tomorrow and am contemplating continuing the On The Road feel of things with Apple Pie in the morning . . . have not had pie yet on this trip.

Utah Rocks

<img style="display:block; "Now that the record is finally out, there is a real danger that I will slobber all over the newsprint trying to convey its merits, and end up with some sort of parochial platitude like 'it ain't bad for a local band.' Well, to hell with that noise. This album can get up and compete with any national product. Flat out, it's the best, most creative music to come out of Seattle since the Sonics -- the band responsible for 'Psycho' and 'The Witch' . . . Dwyer's songs, and the entire group's performance capture all that sidewalk exuberance, and the lyrics are just a whole lot of fun to listen to. The whole thing seems to be a wonderful amalgamation of folk, rock and blues tradition, fostered in an environment more conducive to fun than money".

The Jitters Gyrate . . .
Excerpt of album review by Scott McCaughey [I believe this review is from The Rocket early 1980] . . . "The Jitters aren't New Wave, but open-minded New wavers should like them (sez me), They're not country (well, there's some mixed in there), and they don't sound anything like an acoustic folk duo gone electric. P.K. Dwyer is not Bob Dylan, though he has sort of a strange voice and writes edgy lyrics to fairly basic music. Donna Beck is not Grace Slick -- there's no comparison (sorry Grace). The Jitters are a rock 'n' roll band with guts and a sense of humor; they play tight but not so damn 'professional' that each upcoming note is a foregone conclusion . . . The nine songs on The jitters are all brimming with this healthy attitude . . . a remarkable first album in every artistic sense . . . And despite the fact that just about every song deals with the neurotic and unfulfilled aspects of love, I get a lift each time I hear this album. That's not sick; that's the way it's supposed to work."

Road Dogs Rule!

<img style="display:block; Took this photo on our way to Arizona for PK's show at The Cellar Door in Kingman . . . I really love the more desolate stretches with the amazing, vast sky, beautiful rock formations, and the scrubby brush. The train makes me think of Jack & Neil riding the rails . . .

My latest obsession is to get a cabin on a bit of land in New Mexico surrounded by cottonwood and pine trees . . . with a lovely fireplace and a corner desk for writing and my art projects [am aiming to get enough pieces together to finally have a show]. I've been watching a lot of the old Daniel Boone episodes and I want my own place in the woods . . . if I can ever get PK to "settle down" maybe I'll get a horse and some geese or chickens. I would Love it.

Gettin' Ready

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 301px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mOGM5WFmQ2s/TbNZ_RnVy4I/AAAAAAAAAF8/BobSCpASdyE/s400/circus_9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5598917705346698114" />
We're off to Arizona for Busking in Flagstaff on April 29 and then on to Kingman for a gig at the wonderful Cellar Door on Saturday, April 30 . . .

This show is the pre-kickoff to PK Dwyer's Cosmic America Blues tour! Here is a re-cap of our Summer & Early Fall adventures . . .

Cheers! to the beauty of the Turquoise Trail which we traveled on our way out of Burque heading north. Ultra beautiful night sky here with a gorgeous moon & saw a double rainbow the next day! [August 5]

The Biggest Cheer! goes to PK himself for his gritty determination. His August 6 performance was the first since January 22 [in NYC] when a Hand Injury compounded by Severe Arthritis had PK down & out for about 6 months. [PK now plays Guitar without the Use of his Left Index Finger]

I have to admit to being a little disappointed in Madrid - while cute enough, it just wasn't the bastion of Hipness I expected. Lots of children and dogs running loose which I approve of in theory but I kept waiting for a terrible accident to happen. Cheers! to the Java Lounge for letting PK Busk in the courtyard [super cute place & yummy coffee] A Big Jeer! to all the Fat Tourists who Rocked Out & Jived to PK's fine music, proceeded to take pictures & video and then put Nothing in the Hat. Come on now Folks: That's just Plain Rude! Moving On . . .

Big Cheer! to the Historical Museum in Springer, New Mexico. PK gave an impromptu concert here & we sold a bunch o' CD's. Yay! [August 7]

Many super cute looking Motels in Raton, New Mexico. In fact almost the whole town looks to be comprised mostly of small, retro looking Motels and I wanted to stop and stay at each one. I don't know why I love Motels so much but I sure do! [especially the ones that come with the adorable kitchenettes]

Another Big Cheer! to the attendant at the Colorado City Rest Area [not your typical rest area - really beautiful with lots of trees, benches, and picnic tables - also, super clean] This guy let us Busk there, although by law it's not really allowed. Everyone was so nice and we collected lots o' Smash & Toast. [for those of you not-in-the-know Smash & Toast = Spare Change & Dollars!]

Big Fat Jeer! for Whole Foods for being anti-busker. We tried to play at the Whole Foods in Fort Collins, Colorado but apparently there is an company 'policy' regarding 'that kind of thing' So Shame On You Whole Foods! You've just shown once again why Earth Fare will Always Be the Better Store.

Cheers! to City Market and all the Residents of Rawlins, Wyoming who made us feel so welcome & treated PK so nicely. Mr & Mrs D Love Rawlins! Cowboys Rule! [August 13]

Jeer! to Mr Mouse who invaded our camper, ate Mrs D's Sun Chips and terrorized us during the night. After enduring 2 sleepless nights we finally got the little fellow to leave. [without violence]

Uneventful but Super Hot drive through Utah and Idaho . . . wonderful Natural Beauty though. Stupendous rock formations in Utah and wild horses roaming. The best part of Idaho was the awe inspiring Snake River & the nice folks who gave us directions to a college were we could use our computer to connect to the Real World . . .

[August 18] We experienced the Hottest Day Ever in Baker City, Oregon with 107 degree temperatures. Cheers! to the Oregon Trail Motel in Baker City. A wonderful air conditioned dog friendly room with the Comfiest Bed Ever, clean laundry facilities, wi-fi, a sparkling pool, and Yummy Free Breakfast. All for sixty bucks. You can't beat it. [this was our only room splurge on our way to Seattle - it seemed so luxurious after sweating in the Van for so many days]

August 19 our Chihuahua Boo-boo turned fifteen years old. Way to go Pooper!

Cheers! to Ellensburg, Washington for never changing. We had a grand ol' time Busking here & PK quickly became the talk of the town. [August 20 and September 3]

We made it to Seattle in time for Lou & Rosa's wedding reception party. [they make such a cute couple!] Cheers! to Lou, Rosa and Love. [August 22]

Big Cheer! to Wonderful West Seattle. It was a trip to be back in the old neighborhood for the first time in five years. It hasn't changed too much. The best things are still there: C & P Coffee - Easy Street Records - Maharaja Indian Cuisine - and of course, Alki Beach. Alki is a wonderful spot to Busk. Lots o' nice folks & families enjoying the Beach and you can't beat the View. I don't know why more Seattle Buskers don't play here - it's much better than dealing with all the bureaucracy of the Pike Place Market. [we wuz there on Alki Beach August 21, 24, 30 and September 2, 13, 14, 18]

Big Jeer! to Spencer's Automotive in West Seattle/White Center. I don't know what happened with these guys because they Used To Be the Best mechanics around but something sure has changed. Not only did they not diagnose or fix our Van correctly, they were just plain Rude on top of it. It's a Real Shame because, as I said, they were the best. Who knows if drugs, drink, or just plain laziness is to blame? One thing is for sure: Their AAA rating should be removed. If you care about your car don't go there!

Cheers! to Zippy's [Everett, Washington] and the Old Edison Inn for having PK play . . . also to KISM [Bellingham] for the feature on PK's Illustrious Career. [August 27 - August 29]

Big Cheer! for the Tumbleweed Acoustic Music Festival in Richland, Washington. These folks really care about acoustic music and it shows on every level of the festival. [September 4 & 5]

Extra Big Cheer! to C & P Coffee Co. Just the Nicest Folks and the Best Coffee. We had a great crowd at PK's C & P show so Cheers! to All who showed up [September 6]

Another Big Cheer! for the Columbia City Farmers Market and Janet in particular for booking PK and remembering us & just being nice. [PK played on September 8]

Cheers! to Twin Paradox in Portland and Divine Cupcake in Eugene [Oregon] for booking PK to perform and a Really Big Cheer! to my old friend Tim Erdman, his lovely wife MJ [who we met for the first time on this trip] and Bev for showing up in Portland. I do have to give myself a Jeer! for not doing a better job promoting these Oregon shows . . . another Cheer! to Divine Cupcake for having PK as their first ever musical guest. The Cupcakes are indeed Divine. Super Yummy & Vegan!

[Portland: September 10 & Eugene: September 11]

A Cheer! for Life Source Natural Foods & the Residents of Salem, Oregon. This was another experience like the one in Rawlins, Wyoming. Folks were super nice, we sold a bunch o' CD's and it fairly rained Smash & Toast. [September 12]

Back to Seattle for the Pike Place Market Busker Festival. [the photo above is from KOMO Television's Coverage of the Festival - Cheers! to KOMO] Mrs D has to give the Busker Fest a Cheer! and Jeer! OK, the Pike Place Market itself gets a Cheer! just for being there. The Market holds a lot of great memories for both PK and I. The Daily Dozen Donut Co is still there & just as Delicious as ever! So, thanks to the Market for just Being and for allowing Buskers & the Busker Festival to go on. [September 19]

Pike Place Buskers Guild gets an Overall Jeer! for being A Disorganized Mess from the get-go. No info for applicants - they just sent out application information via facebook. Listen people: Not Everyone is on Facebook! Personally, Mrs D has moved beyond Eighth Grader stuff & she already knows who her Real Friends are . . . No Information was given as to what time to check in at the stage, who the stage manager was - Nothing. Just 2 e-mails the day before the festival wanting performers to be there @ 6:00 am to Build Stages & Set Up Tents. PK & I have been to a lot of festivals over the years and None of them - even the most horribly organized & ones that don't pay - ask the Performers to do the set up work! That is just Wrong. Really Wrong & Disrespectful to All the Performers. I could go on with a Laundry List of what I thought the Buskers Guild could have done better but the upshot of the experience was that although I was ultimately glad PK got to perform I will never apply to this festival again. Also: whomever is responsible for the Busker Permit Policy gets a Jeer! way too much Bureaucracy! Take a Tip from Santa Fe, New Mexico - $10 for a thirty day permit [great for Traveling Buskers who are just passing through] or $30 for a Calendar Year permit [works better for local buskers who are in the area year round]

Last but Not Least: Know Your Market History!

So. By September 19 PK & Mrs D were pert near Fried like Greasy Egg and we were eager to get on our way back to Albuquerque. We couldn't wait to get south of the Seattle-Tacoma area hoping for sunnier and warmer weather. The back carpet in our Van was Soaked and Squishy after 2 nights of Torrential Rain & Wind in Seattle.

Alas & Alakadaddy it was Cold, Grey, and Dreary all the way through Oregon. Very poor Busking weather and we made no money until we reached California. [of course we stopped at Divine Cupcake in Eugene for one last fix before heading home. Mrs D is in Love with the Cupcakes]

We were so anxious to get back home we decided to change our travel plans and go the I-5 corridor & Old Highway 99 playing the Safety Rest Areas along the way. [September 21] This plan was actually working out really well until the Safety Rest Area near Colusa, California where we got The Boot from the Highway Patrol. So, I have to Jeer! the CHP even though for a Cop he was fairly decent about the whole thing and even said He Liked The Music.

Sadly, this little event broke the Lucky Spell we seemed to be having because we started having Major Car Trouble almost immediately after that. We Lurched & Lugged along in really, Horrible, Hot weather and by the time we reached Lodi the Van was barely Farting Along. We were lucky enough to make it off the Highway and to Motel 6. Cheers! to the Lodi Motel 6 - the nicest one we've ever experienced, probably because it was formerly a Holiday Inn.

We were 'stuck in Lodi' for three days while Pep Boys tried to get the Old Van up & running. Big Fat Jeer! to the Lodi Pep Boys. We spent a bunch o' money there for pretty much nothing as the Van started doing it's Lurching thing after about ten minutes of Highway travel. Still we soldiered on thinking if we could just get into New Mexico somehow everything would be Okey-Dokey. Passing from California into Arizona 4 rest areas in a row were Closed. When we pulled into the Walmart parking lot in Kingman, Arizona we fairly cried with relief after ten hot & cranky hours of driving. [September 27]

[September 28] We slept at the Painted Cliffs Rest Area [where you cross the border from Arizona into New Mexico] It was a strange & eerie feeling to be at this rest area again because we had stayed the night there when we were moving cross country from Seattle to North Carolina in December of 2005. [and that seems like a lifetime ago]

[September 29] We passed triumphantly back into New Mexico and the Van lurched and sputtered it's way back to our apartment in Albuquerque. Except for a Colony of Spiders taking up residence at our place everything was as we had left it and the Dwyers were Happy to be Home.

On this Tour Mrs D Folked and she Loved. But I also found out that being On The Road long term can really kick your ass to the curb. We'll see what happens when we do it all again in 2011 with the Cosmic American Blues Tour.

Over & Out!

Busker's Delight . . .

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FOQKl41x_f0/TH0gIa_WdxI/AAAAAAAAACo/59qZ3fzdfJ0/s400/kerouaccor460.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511596848027432722" />
Wahoo! PK & I have had a super and wonderful time busking our way to Washington - the Evergreen State!

The Trip So Far . . .

Camped in a wayside off of Highway 14 the first night just outside of Madrid, New Mexico. Rained in the late afternoon & then Mr Sun came shining through and we saw a Double Rainbow! Of course I'm always looking for signs and took this as a good one . . .

The next day we hung out with the Madrid hippies & tourists and PK busked at the Java Lounge. We got a little Smash & Toast and so could continue on our way. Unfortunately, we had some vehicle trouble the next day and spent the majority of the day sitting at the mechanics so we had to skip over Santa Fe & Taos. Bah!

August 7th PK caught a great crowd at the museum in Springer, New Mexico & gave an impromptu concert. Sold a lot of CD's there - Yay! Next day was also a wonderful busking day in Colorado City at a great little rest area park. Lots o' Smash & Toast here!

Shame on Whole Foods for being Anti-Busker! Tried to busk at Whole Foods in Fort Collins, Colorado but apparently they have a corporate policy against buskers. Boo! Ended up playing on Campus at Colorado State University.

Hit up Laramie, Wyoming next and PK busked in a small city park near Coal Creek Coffee downtown. Nice folks & excellent coffee for a very small price . . . Struck gold the next day at City Market in Rawlins, Wyoming! Super nice people who bought CD's and threw down a lot of Smash & Toast [ if only every day were like this one . . . ]

Saw majestic Bison [or Buffalo as some call them] near Bear River! Mouse got into the camper during the night & ate our Sun Chips! Had a hard time getting rid of the little fellow but he finally took the hint and left us for better pickings elsewhere.

Had a small money day in Evanston, Wyoming and then bypassed Utah and Idaho altogether due to the heat and general lameness of the towns in Idaho. Nothing but a series of strip malls there.

Really beautiful scenery in Utah though . . .

A series of mediocre money days through Oregon and also in Ellensburg, Washington. In Baker City, Oregon it was 107 degrees so we decide to splurge on a room. We stayed at the Oregon Trail Motel and highly recommend this motel to anyone needing a great & economical place to stay. Dogs are allowed, there is free wi-fi, a nice swimming pool, complimentary coffee, tea, and cocoa, clean laundry facilities, and you get a yummy free breakfast form the restaurant next door. Also the bed was the most super comfy bed ever! All that for just under $60 bucks. A travelers dream!

Arrived in Seattle on August 21 and are having a grand ol' time hanging out with friends and busking on Alki Beach & around.
We'll be in Eastern Washington and the Seattle area until PK's performance at the Ninth Annual Pike Place Market Busker Festival. The Festival takes place on Sunday, September 19 & PK performs @ 11:00 am on the South Stage.

See PK's complete schedule here: www.pkdwyer.com

Folk Master D

<img style="float:left; The Dwyer Family Circus out on the road & on tour. We need your support!

So. If you are a Fan & a Friend please keep reading to find out what you can do to help. If you're not a Fan or a Friend, why are you reading this blog? . . .

Q: What is Tour Support?

A: Tour Support keeps a traveling musician, and his crew, on the road -- it provides People Food for Carol & PK and Dog Food for Lazy and The Booboo -- Gasoline & Maintenance for our Gypsy Wagon [ok, it's really a 1974 Camper Van - lovingly called The B(L)uddha] -- Busker Permits -- Guitar Strings and Repair -- Harmonicas, Harmonicas, Harmonicas -- Quarters for the Coin Laundry -- The occasional Night in a Motel Room [quite a Luxury compared to Camping or Boondocking!] -- Funds to start Recording a New CD -- etc. and etc. You get the idea.

Here Are Some Easy & Fun Ways You Can Support PK Dwyer & His Musical Adventures:

1. The first one is easy: Come out to a Live Show! Buy a CD and/or throw some dough in the tip jar. Everybody wins with this one. You get to hear and see PK's spectacular & dynamic live performance and see our smiling faces. And - we get to see you!

2. Almost the same as the first: If you see us Busking on a street corner throw some Smash or Toast - that's another way of saying Coins or Dollars - in the tip jar! Don't be shy, pennies are just as appreciated as dollars. Applause & a Smile is nice too.

3. Hey, do you drink a lot of soda or beer? An unusual but really easy way to support us is to give us your Empty Aluminum Cans! Yes, that's right, we want your empties. We only ask that the cans are clean and dry. We can't be attracting Ants & Bears to the Camper Van. So don't feel weird about bringing your Bag O' Cans [or even just one] to a show. We will be Happy to take them!

4. Purchase some Tunes: Can't make it to a Live Show but still want to get the Great Music? Buy some CD's! How about one for yourself and one for the hard-to-buy-for Quirky Music Lover in your life? If you want to buy with regular ol' money [meaning Cash, Check, or Money Order] just contact us through PK's website and we'll get you set up! If you're one of those types who like to do everything electronically, or you just want to buy a couple of songs, you can purchase your PK Dwyer Tunes through CD Baby.

5. Open Your Mouth! Please help us spread the good word. Don't assume just because you have great taste and know how wonderful PK is that all your friends and neighbors know too. Tell anyone and everyone about the Obscure Underground Bluesman PK Dwyer and his One Man Roadhouse Show!

6. Help Us Find Places to Play: Do you know of a Great Coffeehouse, Small Bar, Bakery, or Cafe that would welcome PK & His Music? Let Us Know! We are always looking for unusual venues and good places to busk.

You might be thinking to yourself: Wow, I Love PK Dwyer and his Music but I live in a really small town & there aren't any good venues for performers here. Well, fret not, there's something that can be done & it's super fun! You can Host a House Concert. Yep, that's right. You could have PK Dwyer perform in your very own living room! Here is a bit of Seattle Music History for you all . . .

For those of you who don't already know: PK Dwyer
was the first busker @
the Pike Place Market in the 1970's with his street band Felix & the Freelicks. Yes, it is true Jim Page was also busking in Seattle back then but he was around the corner playing on First Ave. In those days it was only possible to play the Market on Saturdays because Post Alley was open to auto traffic during the week.

From approximately 1972 - 1974 PK and his various musical formations -
PK & Donna Beck - The Livewires - the afore mentioned Felix & the Freelicks - were the only acts actually busking in the market.

Sometime around 1974 - 75 the Seattle City Council "legalized" busking and performers were free to play as they pleased in the market. Some well known market buskers who have moved beyond Pike Place are: Reverend Chumleigh - Jim Page - Artis the Spoonman [legend has it that Artis was a cook in Fremont in the '70's and was inspired by PK to start playing the spoons publicly] - Baby Gramps - The Flying Karamazov Brothers - and of course, PK Dwyer himself.

In the later '70's PK formed the cowpunk quintet the Jitters. The Jitters were known on the Seattle scene for their gritty & witty songs [all written by PK] and dynamic live shows. PK was infamous for his drunken stage antics. The Jitters also have the distinction of being Grant Alden's first paid interview (1979). [The Jitters were: PK Dwyer, Donna Beck, Dave Hutchison, Rick Tassin, Pete Pendras]

[for those of you living under rocks: Grant Alden started his music journalist career writing for The Rocket - Seattle's first alternative music newspaper. Grant went on to jump on the Cosmic American Music bandwagon and found the alt country mag No Depression]

Alden is someone who knows his history - musically speaking anyway, I can't vouch for him otherwise. And in fact gave the Jitters some airplay on his June 25, 2010 radio show The "Field Notes" cowpunk radio hour on WMKY - FM (Kentucky). This particular program showcased the cowpunk ancestors of alt-country. The Jitters "Don't You Remember That You Are The One That Burned Down The Bridges That I Built Over The River Of Tears That I Cried Over You" was #11 on Grant's playlist. Great song off a great album & if you don't already have a copy you should get one while you still can.

In 1980 The Jitters seemed to be on the cusp of real fame and were preparing to record another album when PK - being the unconventional and adventuresome guy he is - disbanded the group and moved to Europe. He formed a 6 member street performing troupe that did original songs & vaudeville and had a large following in Paris & Amsterdam.

So. Do your learnin' children & know your history.
And remember: Folk Someone You Love

Read The Biography PK was accepted as a performer at this years Tumbleweed Music Festival and is performing Sunday, September 5 on the North Stage. Set time: 11:45 am - 12:30 and of course this performance is part of the
Folk Someone You Love tour. Of course I'm biased but I do think the Sunday North Stage line-up is the best of the festival . . .

PK is proceeded by Hounds @ Bay, and and then followed by 2 superb Washington State performers who I've rarely gotten to see & hear perform live: Hank Cramer and Dan Maher! The great line-up continues with Hawkeye Herman, Emerald City Jug Band, Badger Mt. Dry Band, Gumbo and Romagossa Blue [I don't anything about these last 2 acts]. Our Seattle folk friends Wes Weddell, Nancy K Dillon and Michael Guthrie are all playing on various stages on Saturday. Hey, I'll be selling buttons and raffle tickets to help support Tumbleweed on Saturday, so if you see me be sure to buy one. Support Tumbleweed Music Festival!

This will be PK's first performance there since 2005 and I'm really excited about going back to Tumbleweed this year. It's a small & quirky festival put on by really nice people who care about showcasing and presenting quality live acoustic music. I have great memories from attending previous years. I hope the ice cream vendor still has the same Maple Walnut flavor. I know I'm going to running around like a maniac because Micki Perry and Nancy Dillon are performing at the same time on Saturday. On Sunday Dan Maher is on stage in the same time slot as the Gypsy Dance Troupe and of course, I must spend time checking out the Arts & Crafts vendors. Super Fun.

Hey, what ever happened to Deb Seymour? Is she still performing? I should google . . .

LINKS: Tumblweed Music Festival - PK Dwyer

We Are Here Now

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 210px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_FOQKl41x_f0/TD4aqaKw3oI/AAAAAAAAAAw/WzOJ17p4hLU/s320/GypsyCaravan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493857911319879298" />
Wow. It's hard to believe it's been almost 6 months since PK & I left New York City. And yes, we do miss New York at times. It's true that there is no place like NYC and for a lot of folk it really is the Center of the Universe.

I'll always miss the old neighborhood - we lived on East 111th Street between 2nd & 3rd in wonderful, smelly, beat Spanish Harlem. Fond New York memories include: The Mister Softee Ice Cream Truck - The Strand Bookstore and Mamouns Falafels in The Village - Mamouns is a delicious and cheap way to eat in NYC - Going to Ghandi, on 6th Street in the East Village of course, for a wonderful Indian dinner - A meal at Ghandi's always seemed especially yummy on a crisp fall day - It's true there is nothing like Autumn in New York - Making a pilgrimage to 151 Avenue B - Charlie Parker's House - Bird - Seeing Calder's Circus on my birthday at the Witney Musem - Meeting artists Patrick-Earl Barnes and Nick Ghiz - Seeing Joan Baez live in concert at the historic Town Hall - And of course, watching George Balanchine's Nutcracker performed live at the New York City Ballet - After watching it on PBS Television for so many years it was such a thrill to see it in person! - The Subway, although it is now $2.25 for a one way ride - And of course just the everyday sights, smells and vibe of the city - Arriving in New York City is kind of like being on speed - Everything seems very intense all the time - Everyone is rushing . . .

But we are here now in Albuquerque, New Mexico. And we love it! It is such a joy to walk outside to blue skies - with fluffy, billowing, white pillow clouds - and sunshine everyday! Not to mention glancing up and seeing a cluster of Hot Air Balloons in the sky. We were so lucky to find a cute and cheap apartment very close to Sandia Vista Park [we pay less than half of what we paid in New York for roughly twice the space] And we have a wonderful view of the Sandia Mountains. Another cool thing is that we live just a few blocks from Historic Route 66 - now known as Central Avenue. Hey we're gettin' our kicks . . . There's a great car culture here. Lots of old vans, campers and trucks - and of course, low riders. We adopted a dog named Lazy from the local Animal Shelter after only being here for about a week. He's a great addition to our lives and it's such a joyous thing to to have a young, playful ball of joy & slobber after the pain of losing Frankie [The Dog of Love] There are spectacular and amazing sunsets every day too. And at night you can see ALL the stars and moon shining down upon you. Here no one is rushing . . .

There is still much here we have yet to see and explore. I especially want to check out Winning Coffee Co and Taj Mahal for Indian Food. Our financial woes have caused us to lay pretty low lately but things are starting to look up. Next week we are [finally] going up to Santa Fe & Taos to busk & camp. Hopefully, soon I will figure out how to post pics from our phone but for now I'm just going to post random photos I find & like.
